The air traffic and passenger volumes continue to bounce back in Romania and are now ahead of pre pandemic period. Almost 25 million passengers travelled through Romanian airports last year (year ending 2022) – a YoY increase of 17%.
The pre-pandemic numbers have finally been surpassed as the total passengers that travelled rose to 24,593,281and is almost 6% higher than recorded in 2019 (23,234,580 total travelled passengers).
"We are happy to note that in Romania passenger traffic has recovered strongly, so we have exceeded the values recorded before the pandemic. By comparison, air traffic in Europe will probably reach 2019 levels only at the end of this year.
In recent years, most airports in Romania have carried out important investment projects. New terminals were built, existing ones were expanded and modernized, work was done on extending runways, tracks and taxiways, and modern security equipment was purchased. All these investments will allow us to process in optimal conditions an increasing number of passengers. We expect traffic values to increase constantly and we estimate that in 2040 we will exceed 50 million passengers at Romanian airports" said David Ciceo, President of the Romanian Airports Association.
Comparing the traffic data recorded by Romanian airports in the last two years, it can be seen that in 2023 the number of passengers on domestic routes decreased by 8 percent compared to 2022, reaching 1,821,052 people transported. At the same time, the number of passengers on international routes experienced a significant important increase of 19.62% in 2023 compared to 2022 (22,737,257 passengers).
During 2023, a total of 233,027 aircraft movements (landings and take-offs) were recorded, 5.6% more than the previous year. However, air cargo traffic decreased by 5.7%: in 2023, 50,786 tons of cargo were transported at Romanian airports, compared to 53,877 in 2022.
The full year data confirmed the trend seen throughout the year which demonstrated double digit monthly gains on a prior year basis.
